The word "watch" is devised from the word "waecc" used by the Saxons to designate "those who kept observation" - the sentry or guard, the watchmen of the night who called the hours.  Even today time on board ships is measured by "watches."  It was natural and convenient that the term watch should be applied to the first portable timekeepers introduced towards the end of the fifteenth century.
